Civil Engineering Unit Miami to welcome new commanding officer

MIAMI - Coast Guard Civil Engineering Unit (CEU) Miami will welcome its new commanding officer during a change-of-command ceremony at Base Support Unit Miami, 100 MacArthur Causeway, Miami Beach, Fla., at 10 a.m., Thursday.

Cmdr. Benjamin L. Davis will relieve Capt. Joel Dolbeck, whose next assignment will be program manager for the Coast Guard's newest smallboat, the Response Boat-Medium, at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Davis' previous assignment was facilities engineer at the Telecommunication and Information Systems Command in Alexandria, Va.

CEU Miami provides the full range of shore facility planning, design, contracting, construction management, environmental compliance and remediation, and real property management services in support of the Coast Guard missions of more than 160 operational units, occupying 4.4 million square feet of buildings. CEU Miami's vast geographic area of responsibility extends as far south as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, north along the east coast of the United States up to and including South Carolina, west along the Gulf Coast including Texas, the Western Rivers region comprised of thousands of miles of the Mississippi, Missouri, and other inland rivers, and to the more remote regions of Wyoming, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

The change of command ceremony preserves the rich heritage of naval tradition. It is a formal custom and following military protocol, is designed to strengthen respect for the continuity of command that is vital to any military organization. The culmination of the ceremony is reached when both officers read their orders, face one another, salute, and transfer responsibility for the command. This provides the entire command with the knowledge that the officer directed by proper authority is taking command and an opportunity to witness this transfer of responsibility.
