NEW WEATHER BUOYS AID HURRICANE TRACKING IN THE CARIBBEAN ***Media Opportunity, Press Briefing Monday, May 23 beginning at 1:30 p.m. Location: Coast Guard Base San Juan, in La Puntilla*** SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Monday afternoon beginning at 1:30 p.m. the Coast Guard Cutter Oak will host a press briefing for the media to ask questions and take photos of two NOAA buoys that will be deployed east of Barbados next week. Coast Guard Cutter Oak's Commanding Officer, LCDR Timothy Wendt, will describe the journey and deployment procedures while Dr. Paul F. Moersdorf, Director, National Data Buoy Center has traveled to Puerto Rico, to answer technical questions concerning the Buoys and their capabilities. The Coast Guard and NOAA have partnered to deploy a system of seven weather buoys in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea to enhance hurricane monitoring and forecasting. Of the seven buoy stations to be established, the crew of the Oak will be deploying two off the east coast of Barbados in the Atlantic Ocean. The other five will be deployed throughout the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea by NOAA and other Coast Guard cutters.
