OCEAN JEWEL DETAINED AT PORT

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.The OCEAN JEWEL OF ST. PETERSBURG was detained by the Coast Guard today and will not be permitted to operate until certain safety and security requirements have been satisfied.

The detention was the result of a Coast Guard quarterly reexamination that is intended to ensure a vessel is being operated in a safe manner.

Safety and security discrepancies were discovered during the reexamination that included firefighting appliances not operating properly.

The Coast Guard conducts routine examinations of all passenger vessels.  These examinations are to help ensure that crewmembers remain competent in performing their duties by performing fire and abandon ship drills among other things.  The importance of these examinations is to verify compliance with fire safety, lifesaving, and security regulations.

The OCEAN JEWEL is making good efforts to correct the discrepancies and they may be corrected as soon as tomorrow.

Concern for the safety of the public that embarks on passenger vessels continues to be one of the Coast Guard’s highest priorities.
