SEAMAN SICK AT SEA

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Coast Guard Station San Juan responded to a medical emergency at sea late last night when the station crew transferred Mr. Theodoros Giorgaras, a 47-year-old Greek crew member aboard the the motor vessel Nicopolis to an ambulance waiting dockside at Coast Guard Sector San Juan.

Giorgaras, was complaining of stomach problems severe enough for the master of the Nicopolis to notify the Coast Guard command center requesting assistance.

Sector San Juan Command Center briefed the flight surgeon who recommended the patient be transferred to a hospital. The station ready crew was then directed to launch the 47-foot motor lifeboat and retreive Giorgaras from the Nicopolis, twelve miles north of San Juan.

Giorgaras was able to climb down from the tanker into the motor lifeboat under his own strength but was assisted onto the docks at the Coast Guard base where he was further transferred to the waiting ambulance.

"Through good communications and teamwork, this merchant mariner received the timely medical attention he needed.  That is one of the reasons were are here 24/7," said Lt. j.g. Galleaono, senior controller on duty.
