COAST GUARD SUSPENDS SEARCH FOR 9 PEOPLE IN A LIFERAFT THEY EMBARKED AFTER THEIR BOAT CAPSIZED

CORTEZ, Fla. - The Coast Guard suspended its search today for nine people who reportedly embarked a liferaft when their catamaran Endeavor began to capsize five miles west of Egmont Key, Fla., shortly after midnight yesterday.

Several searches with a C-130 airplane and an HH-60 helicopter from Air Station Clearwater and a rescue boat from Station Cortez covered 3,072 square-miles within and around the area indicated by the vessel's master during his distress call.

No further information regarding the origin of the vessel or the identity of its passengers was relayed nor are there any correlating reports of missing people or overdue boats.

Weather conditions were 2-3 foot seas and 15-knot winds during the time of the initial call and picked up to 5-8 foot seas and 20-knot winds later during the search.

Mariners are urged to keep a sharp lookout and anyone with information regarding the catamaran/liferaft and its occupants is asked to contact the Coast Guard at (305) 415-6800.
