Coast Guard Station Cortez rescues 7 from grounded vessel
CORTEZ, Fla. - A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Cortez rescued seven people who were aboard a 98-foot commercial vessel that ran aground in Longboat Pass early Saturday morning.

At 3:00 a.m., Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg Operations Center received a report from Winston Kanuss, the captain and owner of the Sir Winston, a 98-foot commercial passenger vessel, that the vessel gone aground in Longboat pass with seven people onboard.

After the operations center learned that Tow Boat U.S., was unable to respond due to dense fog conditions, and the grounded vessel was beginning to take-on-water, they directed the launch of a Coast Guard Station Cortez 25-foot response boat to respond at approximately 3:15 a.m.

Coast Guard Station Cortez crews arrived onscene at 3:38 a.m., and were able to safely transfer the 3 women and 4 men off the grounded vessel and back to Coast Guard Station Cortez.

The Coast Guard is currently assessing the condition of the grounded vessel with a marine inspection and investigation team.  No pollution has been reported as a result of the grounded vessel at this time.
