Coast Guard Port Security Units to deploy for Haiti relief efforts

CLEARWATER, Fla. - More than 118 members from multiple Coast Guard Port Security Units across the country are scheduled to deploy to Haiti Saturday afternoon from MacDill Air Force Base, in Tampa, Fla., to asist with Haiti relief efforts.

Coast Guard members from port security units in Clearwater, Everett, Wa., and San Pedro, Calif., will be providing security while several Coast Guard units re-establish the port in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

The Coast Guard reserve PSU members are being activated to join numerous Coast Guard assets currently assisting in the Haiti relief efforts.  They will depart from MacDill Air Force Base aboard a C-17 Globemaster III, one of the largest aircraft in the Air Force inventory.

Coast Guard PSUs are a deployable unit organized for sustained worldwide operations. They have the ability to deploy within 96 hours and establish operations within 24 hours, providing waterborne and land-based protection for shipping and critical port facilities. The deployable, specialized forces consist of 27 Coast Guard units that are primarily law-enforcement, tactical and port security units.
