Coast Guard Cutter Oak returns from 30-day deployment

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Coast Guard Cutter Oak returned home to Charleston Saturday after a 30-day deployment to Florida, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Port Au Prince, Haiti, and San Juan, Puerto Rico

During this deployment, the cutter Oak, a 225-foot seagoing buoy tender, conducted an international engagement with Haiti's Coast Guard. Guardians stationed aboard Oak provided personnel training in first aid and handgun maintenance, assisted to make Haitian patrol boat equipment repairs and helped to resolve communication equipment issues.

In addition, Oak crewmembers attempted to tow an inoperable 40-foot Haitian boat to Miamifor repairs. With Tropical Storm Ida threatening the operation, crewmembers devised a plan hoist the approximately 20,000 pound boat aboard Oak to ensure a successful Miami arrival.

Oak crewmembers provided aids-to-navigation by fixing, replacing and positioning many discrepant navigational aids throughout the Port Au Prince, Guantanamo Bay and San Juan. Some discrepancies were more than 10-years-old.

Three stationary aids were constructed in partnership with the Navy.
