Coast Guard Station Port Canaveral receives new response boat

Editors note: Media interested in attending should R.S.V.P. with Chief Petty Officer Jason Brennan at (321) 403-0467. Media will have an opportunity to tour and ride the new response boat during a demonstration.

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. - Coast Guard Station Canaveral, Fla., will host a media availability to demonstrate the new 45-foot Response Boat-Medium (RB-M) Wednesday at 10 a.m.

The RB-M is a multi-mission boat that operates in coastal zones, which includes inshore and inland waterways and open ocean out to 50-nautical miles. The RB-M is a self-righting, 45-foot all-aluminum boat with twin-diesel engines and water jet propulsion.  It is capable of speeds in excess of 46 mph and provides significantly improved maneuverability.

The Coast Guard accepted the first RB-M March 31, 2008, at Coast Guard Station Little Creek, Va.  Overall, 16 RB-Ms have been delivered to the Coast Guard. The RB-M is enhancing the Coast Guard's capability to conduct search and rescue, Homeland Security, and maritime law enforcement missions.

The RB-M will replace the Coast Guard’s 41-foot and non-standard utility boats operating from Coast Guard shore stations. The 41-foot Utility Boats have served the Coast Guard well as the mainstay of Coast Guard station operations for decades, operating well in excess of two million hours and well beyond their planned service life.

More information about the Response Boat-Medium can be found at: http://www.uscg.mil/acquisition/rbm/default.asp

Photos and videos of the vessel can be found at: http://cgvi.uscg.mil/media/main.php by entering a keyword search for RB-M.
