Coast Guard responds to vessel aground near Palmas Del Mar, Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – A coordinated effort by Coast Guard crews, Puerto Rico’s Forces United for Rapid Action (F.U.R.A.), Sea Rescue and Sea Tow are underway to salvage the 40-foot boat, Jamie K, which ran aground near Palmas Del Mar, Puerto Rico, Sunday.

Crewmembers aboard the Jamie K notified Sector San Juan Coast Guard command center controllers Sunday afternoon, via VHF radio, to report the vessel had lost power and drifted onto rocks near Palmas Del Mar.

The Coast Guard crew from Station San Juan, aboard a 33-foot Special Purpose - Law Enforcement boat and F.U.R.A. provided support on scene. Coast Guard controllers launched an Air Station Borinquen, Puerto Rico, MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to assist. Three good Samaritans on jet skis were in the area and transferred the three survivors from the vessel to shore safely.

Sea Tow and Sea Rescue continue to work on removing the vessel from the rocks. Coast Guard pollution investigators conducted assessments Monday and found no signs of pollution in the water.

All fuel was removed from the vessel.
