MARATHON, Fla. -- The Coast Guard responded to a report of diesel leaking from two portable fuel tanks that washed ashore Tuesday on Little Palm Island, a private residence in Marathon. Coast Guard pollution response members at Sector Key West, Fla., received the initial report around noon Tuesday from the caretaker of Little Palm Island who reported two fuel tanks had washed ashore and appeared to be leaking. Both tanks, one a 100 gallon tank and the other a 150 gallon tank contained, diesel fuel. Coast Guard Sector Key West opened the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund and hired a local environmental response contractor, to contain the spill, remove the fuel tanks, and clean up the area. The contractors were able to remove the fuel tanks containing approximately 250 gallons of diesel fuel and clean up the spill by 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Coast Guard investigators are working with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to identify the responsible party for this incident.
