Coast Guard to conduct oil spill response exercise on Tybee Island

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. – The Coast Guard will conduct a joint pollution equipment deployment exercise Wednesday on Lazaretto Creek in the vicinity of the boat landing near Old Tybee Road. Boat crews from Coast Guard Station Tybee, Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team Tybee, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary will work alongside personnel from Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Savannah, Ga., and Coast Guard Sector Charleston, S.C., to deploy oil containment boom to practice shoreline protection strategies and mitigation techniques in accordance with the Georgia Coastal Area Contingency Plan. The oil containment boom deployment is part of a two-day training program designed to better prepare Coast Guard personnel in advanced of a real oil spill event. The exercise is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
