Coast Guard suspends search for missing vessel off Puerto Rico

MIAMI - The Coast Guard suspended its search Sunday evening for a capsized vessel in the vicinity of Luquillo, Puerto Rico, after a reporting source notified watchstanders of a possible boat fire Sunday morning.

A good Samaritan called watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector San Juan Command Center around 12:50 a.m. to report sighting multiple distress flares, a vessel on fire, and the vessel then capsizing.

Coast Guard crews searched for 10 hours and covered an area of more than 800 square miles for any signs of a capsized vessel.

Searching were:

  • An HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen, Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.
  • Crewmembers aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Key Largo.

Coast Guard Cutter Key Largo is a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
