Coast Guard urges boaters to be safe during holiday weekend

Editors note: Videos of proper use of boating safety equipment are linked below.

MIAMI -- The Coast Guard urges boaters to be safe and exercise caution while enjoying this Labor Day weekend.

Coast Guard law-enforcement crews will be on the lookout for people operating their vessels unsafely or boating under the influence. The penalties for BUI can include revocation of operating privileges, fines and jail.

Boaters are urged to watch the weather. The effects of a hurricane or tropical storm may be felt from hundreds of miles away. Boaters should also be aware of possible severe weather associated with Tropical Storm Erika.

The National Weather Service broadcasts marine weather forecasts regularly. Forecasts are available on VHF Channels 1 through 5 and on the NWS Web site: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/.

Boaters are reminded to always wear their life jackets and file a float plan with a family member or friend. Boaters are also urged to have a working VHF radio, signaling devices and an emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB).

Additional information on boating safety can be found at www.uscgboating.org.
