Coast Guard to award good Samaritans for role in Haitian migrants rescue

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- The Coast Guard will recognize three good Samaritans during a ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday at Coast Guard Station Fort Pierce.

The Coast Guard will present the Meritorious Public Service Award to Matt Porter, Keith Monz and Anais Roque, all residents of West Palm Beach, Fla., for their role in the rescue of 16 Haitian migrants off Boynton Beach, Fla., May 13.

The Coast Guard Cutter Cormorant, which was involved in the rescue of the Haitian migrants and is homeported in Fort Pierce, will serve as back drop to the event. Personnel from Coast Guard Stations Fort Pierce, Lake Worth Inlet, Air Station Miami and the Coast Guard Auxiliary will also be in attendance.

The Meritorious Public Service Award, which is the second highest Coast Guard issued public service award, is given to recognize substantial contributions to Coast Guard missions.
