MIAMI -- This video, taken during a Haitian migrant interdiction in May 2008, highlights the dangerous nature of taking to sea in a grossly overloaded vessel with no life-saving equipment.

Coast Guard Cutter Dauntless crewmembers located a sail-freighter approximately 20 miles south of Great Inagua, Bahamas, May 9, 2008. The crew launched two smallboat crews and distributed life jackets to the migrants. Shortly thereafter, approximately 30 to 40 of the Haitian migrants fell overboard after sudden movement on the vessel resulted in a loss of stability.

Coast Guard crews immediately began pulling the migrants from the water into their smallboats resulting in zero loss of life.

The cutter Dauntless repatriated the 104 Haitian migrants to Cap-Haitien, Haiti, May 12, 2008. (U.S. Coast Guard video)
