NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - Coast Guard Station Ponce de Leon Inlet, in New Smyrna Beach, will have a change of command ceremony Friday at 10 a.m.

Senior Chief Michael Jensen, will assume command of Station Ponce de Leon Inlet from Senior Chief Newman L. Cantrell, who has served as the station's commanding officer since 2005. Jensen is reporting from Coast Guard Station Manistee, Mich., where he served as officer in charge.

Station Ponce de Leon Inlet's missions include search and rescue, law enforcement, and pollution response.

The change of command ceremony is a time-honored event preserved by the rich heritage of naval tradition. It is a custom that is formal and impressive and designed to strengthen the respect for the continuity of command that is vital to any military organization.

The climax of the ceremony is reached when both senior chief petty officers read their orders, face one another, salute and transfer responsibility for the command. This provides the entire command with the knowledge that the new senior chief petty officer directed by proper authority is taking command and an opportunity to witness this transfer of responsibility.
