Coast Guard, local agencies target boaters under the influence

WHAT:  The Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and state and local law enforcement agencies, will discuss their role in Operation Dry Water, a nationally coordinated effort aimed at reducing boating under the influence (BUI) and the number of drug and alcohol-related accidents and fatalities on local waterways.

WHO:  Coast Guard, FWC, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, St. Johns Sheriff's Office, Volusia County Sheriff's Office, Clay County Sheriff's Office, Marion County Sheriff's Office.

WHEN:  Thursday, June 25, 2009, at 1 p.m.

WHERE:  Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville located at 4200 Ocean Street, Atlantic Beach, FL 32223

BACKGROUND:  In 2008 approximately 28 percent of all fatal boating accidents in the state of Florida were a result of alcohol or drug use. The Coast Guard, FWC and other marine law enforcement partners are making every effort to reduce this figure and save more lives.

Boating under the influence (BUI) includes the use of alcohol, illegal drugs and the use of prescription drugs while operating a motor vessel. Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs impairs a boat operator's vision and reaction time. Sun, wind, fatigue and an unstable waterway environment intensify the effects alcohol or drugs have on a boater. Intoxicated boaters are susceptible to injuries or run the risk of falling overboard due to impaired coordination and balance.

Boaters can expect to see an increased law enforcement presence on coastal and inland waterways not only this weekend, but throughout the busy summer season.

Those caught boating under the influence may be fined and/or jailed, have their boat seized and face the possibility of a suspension of boating privileges.
