| Local Coast Guard Cutter Vigilant to return from 8-month deployment |
|
PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. - A local 210-foot Reliance-class cutter is scheduled to return Tuesday, at 11 a.m. to Port Canaveral, after an 8-month dockside deployment in Baltimore, Md. The Coast Guard Cutter Vigilant crewmembers will return from a dry dock where the ship received approximately $8 million worth of repairs and system upgrades as part of the Coast Guard's Mission Effectiveness Project. Repairs and upgrades included mechanical repairs; the installation of new boat launch and recovery systems; replacement of the ship's air conditioning, refrigeration, galley and boiler systems; and a reconditioning of the ship's hull, deck coverings and bilge spaces. During the dry dock, Viligant's crew sailed for a 2-month patrol on the Coast Guard Cutter Confidence, homeported in Port Canaveral. In addition, crewmembers received law enforcement training, attended technical schools and were temporarily assigned duties at other Coast Guard units across the country. Vigilant's missions include search and rescue, law enforcement and homeland security across the southeastern United States and Caribbean.
