| Coast Guard presents award to member of Port Authority |

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. - The Coast Guard presented a Meritorious Public Service Award Wednesday to J.R. Klaman, Port Canaveral's Port Authority director of public safety. Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville's commanding officer, Capt. Paul F. Thomas, presented the award to Klaman, who works closely with the Coast Guard's Marine Safety Detachment to advance security and provide a safe harbor. The award commended Klaman's leadership in a variety of port security initiatives, as well as his critical role in issues concerning assessments, intelligence sharing and compliance with laws and regulations. "Klaman has been pivotal to identifying security issues in the port, developing courses of action, and building consensus among stakeholders," said Thomas during the presentation. "I was surprised, I didn't know I was going to be getting the award, but I am very pleased," said Klaman. "All of my work couldn't have been accomplished without Captain Thomas and the MSD."
The award is the Coast Guard's second-highest public service award given to recognize an organization or individual's substantial contribution to the Coast Guard that produces tangible results, provides unique benefits to the public, and advances a Coast Guard mission. |
