PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. - Coast Guard crewmembers held a memorial dedication ceremony Wednesday at Station Port Canaveral to remember and honor a shipmate, Fireman Carlos D. Buford, who was murdered Nov. 30, 2008. The site was designed by the station's crew, who used their time off to create the memorial. "I thought we should do something to remember him, said Petty Officer 1st Class Robert J. Kirbert. "We raised the money and everybody pitched in." Carlos Buford's brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Cindy Buford of Canton, Miss., attended the ceremony to see the memorial and to meet members of the station. "The way the Coast Guard treated (us) lets me know they are my family too," said Cindy. The memorial was dedicated on what would have been Buford's 30th birthday. Buford was killed while on vacation in Canton. |
