Coast Guard Cutter Dolphin crewmembers locate 115 bricks of marijuana

Coast Guard Cutter Dolphin crewmembers locate 115 bricks of marijuana on a 29-foot vessel

MIAMI - Crewmembers from the Coast Guard Cutter Dolphin offloaded 115 bricks of marijuana--nearly 1,250 pounds--at Coast Guard Sector Miami on June 13.

While conducting law enforcement patrols, crewmembers aboard the 87-foot cutter Dolphin located a 29-foot U.S.-flagged, white-hulled vessel traveling west from Bimini, Bahamas.

The Dolphin crew boarded the vessel to conduct an initial safety inspection and made a plain view discovery of nearly 1,250 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated street value of $2.5 million.

"This is the first drug bust for the crew of the Dolphin and we are ecstatic to keep nearly 1,250 pounds of marijuana off the streets,” said Lt. Peter Lang, Dolphin's commanding officer. “I am extremely proud of what this crew has accomplished."

The two suspected smugglers aboard the vessel were detained and taken aboard the Dolphin and later transferred to U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents. The vessel and the marijuana were transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Miami.

Coast Guard Cutter Dolphin is an 87-foot coastal patrol boat homeported in Miami.
