COAST GUARD CONDUCTS DOUBLE MEDEVAC

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - A Borinquen, Puerto Rico, rescue helicopter crew transported two patients with medical problems from the cruise ship Millennium, 100 miles north of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, this morning at about 6:00.

Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center San Juan received a call from the cruise ship crew at about 11:25 last night. The crew reported a 59-year-old man had experienced a heart attack and continuing chest pains.

The Coast Guard flight surgeon recommended the patient be medically evacuated; the medevac was scheduled for approximately 7:00 a.m. when the cruise ship would be within range for an aircraft.

At 6:35 a.m. when the Borinquen HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter was en route the cruise ship, RCC San Juan was notified of a second patient aboard the cruise ship, a 45-year-old man with internal bleeding.

The Coast Guard flight surgeon agreed with recommendations to hoist both patients. Once on scene with the Millennium, the helicopter successfully retrieved both patients.

The helicopter and crew were met by emergency medical personnel in San Juan who transferred both men to Centro Medico Hospital.
