Coast Guard Station Tybee Island hosts media availability

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Coast Guard Station Tybee Island, Ga., will host a media availability Friday morning at 10.

Media are invited to join Coast Guard Station Tybee Island boarding teams as they patrol the Savannah and Tybee Island area waters during a boating safety patrol. Coast Guard members will also be available to discuss safe boating practices and free vessel safety inspections by the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

National Safe Boating Week begins May 16 and ends May 22. The Coast Guard and local officials are teaming up to inform the public of the deadly risks involved with unsafe boating practices, and the importance of wearing a life jacket when participating in any water activity.

Approximately 700 people in the U.S. die every year in boating related accidents. A majority of the accidents are caused by poor judgment and human error, not equipment failure or weather conditions. Wearing a life jacket greatly increases your chance of survival in case of emergency.

Limited space is available for the media availability. Interested media should R.S.V.P. with Bobby Nash at 305-318-1864 to ensure space is available. The boating safety patrol will be leaving from Coast Guard Station Tybee Island at Ft. Pulaski Highway 80 on Tybee Island.
