NFL legend Dan Marino, Coast Guard kick off National Safe Boating Week

Editors note: Due to limited parking availability, media interested in attending Tuesday’s event at Coast Guard Integrated Support Command Miami are requested to contact the public affairs office at 305-415-6683.

MIAMI -- The Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary, along with state and local agencies, will hold a media availability at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Coast Guard Integrated Support Command Miami to kick off National Safe Boating Week and to discuss the importance of being a prepared boater.

Scheduled to speak at the event are:

  • Dan Marino, NFL Hall of Fame Quarterback
  • U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, representing the 18th Congressional District of Florida
  • Seventh Coast Guard District Commander Rear Adm. Steve Branham

During the event, Wayne Carter will present a proclamation to Rear Adm. Branham on behalf of Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez saluting the men and women who raise boating safety awareness.

Sponsored by the National Safe Boating Campaign, National Safe Boating Week begins May 16, 2009, and will continue until May 22, 2009, just in time for Memorial Day weekend when boating activity peaks.

This year's campaign message is "Wear it," emphasizing life jacket use as the best way to survive boating accidents and to avoid drowning.

Along with demonstrating the proper wear and use of life jackets, Coast Guard personnel will demonstrate how to properly and safely use signaling devices, such as emergency flares and Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs).

The number of fatalities reported for 2008 decreased from the previous year by 30 percent. The National Safe Boating Campaign hopes to continue this trend by educating boaters on the safety equipment that is essential to increasing survival rates during unforeseen incidents.
