Oil spill response equipment staged at Fort Pulaski

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Savannah has pre-positioned oil spill response equipment at the Fort Pulaski National Monument Wednesday in the event of an oil spill on the Savannah River.   

MSU Savannah worked with the National Park Service to arrange an on-site storage location for a 23-foot trailer containing 500 feet of oil spill boom, oil-absorbent material, and other equipment needed to deploy the boom. By keeping the oil spill response trailer and equipment on the park grounds, the Coast Guard or other response organizations will be able to quickly deploy the boom.

 

The boom could then be positioned to protect the shoreline around the park or other structures, such as the historic Cockspur Island Lighthouse.

MSU Savannah has been training members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department's Marine Patrol Unit on different boom-deployment techniques.  The training, along with the newly pre-staged equipment, will speed the deployment of the boom during an oil spill incident.
