Coast Guard locates 2 boaters missing since Sunday

MIAMI -- The Coast Guard located two boaters Friday afternoon about seven miles north of Orange Cay, Bahamas, who went missing Sunday.

The crew of a C-130 Hercules fixed-wing aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla., spotted Walfrido Gomez, 26, and Walter Pereira, age unknown, on their disabled white 33-foot center-console Avanti at 11:18 a.m. Friday.

Search and rescue coordinators at the Seventh Coast Guard District in Miami immediately launched the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Diamondback to render assistance to the men.

The C-130 crew dropped a VHF radio to Gomez and Pereira to establish communications and the men said they were OK, but were thirsty and hungry. The aircrew then dropped food and water to the men.

A family member called the Coast Guard Wednesday to report Gomez and Pereira left Saturday from Haulover Marina in Miami and were scheduled to return Sunday, but did not.

Also assisting in the search were:

  • Two HU-25 Falcon jet crews from Coast Guard Air Station Miami
  • The crew of the 270-foot Coast Guard Cutter Forward, homeported in Portsmouth, Va.
  • The crew of the 270-foot Coast Guard Cutter Thetis, homeported in Key West, Fla.

The cutter Diamondback is an 87-foot coastal patrol boat homeported in Miami.
