Coast Guard Cutter Reef Shark to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands

Editor’s Note: There will be a media availability in Saint Thomas Wednesday, April 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and in Saint Croix Friday, April 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Coast Guard Cutter Reef Shark will visit the U.S. Virgin Islands for the first time Wednesday at 9 a.m. during a four-day visit that includes a two-day port call in Saint Thomas followed by a two-day port call in Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Coast Guard Cutter Reef Shark will be holding free public tours in Saint Thomas and Saint Croix during the following tour schedules:

Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Where: Charlotte Amalie, Waterfront

When:  Wednesday, April 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Thursday, April 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

Where: Christiansted, Customs Pier

When: Friday, April 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Saturday, April 4 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Reef Shark is the final 87-foot coastal patrol boat just commissioned to the Coast Guard Monday March 23 and will be responsible for conducting search and rescue, law enforcement, maritime safety, and homeland defense operations throughout the Caribbean Sea.

Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Rachel S. Cruzcosa, a San Angelo, Texas native, is the first commanding officer of the Reef Shark. Cruzcosa, a 2006 graduate of the Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn., took the helm as one of only four female commanding officers in the 87-foot patrol boat fleet.
