MIAMI - Crewmembers from the Coast Guard Cutter Spencer returned 39 Haitian migrants to Cap Haitien, Haiti, Thursday, after interdicting them in their overloaded vessel in the waters west of Isle de la Tortue, Haiti, Tuesday.
While conducting routine patrols in the Windward Passage Tuesday, Spencer crewmembers located the sail freighter. Spencer crewmembers safely embarked the 39 migrants and provided food, water, shelter and basic medical care to the migrants.
Since Jan. 1, Coast Guard crews have interdicted a total of 663 Haitian migrants.
Spencer is a 270-foot medium endurance cutter homeported in Boston.
