Media Note: Media interested in attending the event are requested to arrive no later than 9:45 a.m. and to contact PA3 Rob Simpson at 305-965-4672.

WHAT:The Coast Guard will begin enforcement of the Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC) for the Ports of Tampa, St. Petersburg and Manatee, Tuesday.

WHO:  Coast Guard Capt. Timothy Close, commander of Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, Fla., and a Tampa Bay Port Authority representative will be available for interviews.

WHEN: Monday, Jan. 12 at 10 a.m.

WHERE: Tampa Port Authority, 1101 Channelside Drive, Tampa FL, 33602

WHY:In accordance with the requirements of the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) and the Security and Accountability for Every Port Act (SAFE Port Act), the TWIC will serve as an identification card for all personnel requiring unescorted access to secure areas of MTSA regulated facilities.

The Coast Guard will be responsible for enforcing TWIC rules, and will be assisted by facility owners, port police, and other federal, state and local partners to achieve the security goals of the program.  To ensure that all port facilities are complying with the TWIC requirements, Coast Guard and other law-enforcement agencies will conduct routine inspections and random spot checks.
