| Coast Guard responds to ship aground on Kiawah Island, S.C. | |
| CHARLESTON, S.C. - The 77-foot scallop boat Nanami, homeported in Pennsauken, N.J., ran aground today on Kiawah Island. S.C., after its anchor chain broke Thursday evening. The two crewmembers aboard, Greg Cooper, 52, of Cape May, N.J., and Nora Kim, 47, of Pennsauken, are safe and remain with the boat. They were enroute to Cherry Point, S.C. The boat's owners, with Coast Guard oversight, will attempt to refloat the vessel as early as Saturday. The vessel has 400 gallons of diesel fuel on board and would be a pollution hazard if left on the beach. This is the second time the Coast Guard has responded to the Nanami. During the Nanami's transit from New Jersey, it required Coast Guard assistance when it became disabled off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. The boat was towed to Southport, N.C., by the Coast Guard Cutters Vigorous and Block Island.
