  Marine Safety Information Bulletin - Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Island

 Tropical Storm Omar 

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Sector San Juan Marine Safety and Security Duty Officers are notifying all facilities and vessels in the area of responsibility that the Captain of the Port has set and anticipates setting the following Port Conditions for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, due to the arrival of Tropical Storm Omar.

Port Condition YANKEE (sustained gale force winds from a hurricane force storm are predicted within 24 hours) is set throughout the ports in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

During Port Condition YANKEE, the ports along the southern coast of Puerto Rico, Guanica to Yabucoa, including Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands and the ports along the northern coast, Mayaguez to Fajardo, including Saint Thomas and Saint John, U.S. Virgin Islands, are closed to inbound vessels greater than 200 gross tons. 

The Captain of the Port anticipates setting Port Condition ZULU (sustained gale force winds from a hurricane force storm are predicted within 12 hours) as follows:  During Port Condition ZULU the ports will remain closed to all incoming and outgoing vessel traffic until directed by the Captain of the Port.

For the ports along the southern coast of Puerto Rico, Guanica and Yabucoa, including Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Port Condition ZULU will be in effect by 4 a.m. Wednesday.

For the ports along the northern coast of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez to Fajardo, Port Condition Zulu will be in effect at 9 a.m. Wednesday, while in Saint Thomas and Saint John, U.S. Virgin Islands, Port Condition ZULU will be in effect by 5 a.m. Wednesday.

All intra-island ferries in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands will be allowed to continue to operate Tuesday, however, they must cease operations an be secured at their designated mooring facility when Port Condition Zulu is in place for their respective port.

Future port conditions cannot be predicted with any degree of certainty, but provided the storm remains on the projected course and track, port stakeholders can expect the established progression of port conditions.

Owners and operators of recreational vessels should follow the small craft advisories from the National Weather Service, and take the necessary measures to safeguard the safety of their vessels.
