Fernandina Beach man survives plane crash, Coast Guard rescues

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., -- A helicopter crew from Air Station Savannah, Ga., rescued a Fernandina Beach, Fla., pilot about 8:30 p.m. Monday night after his plane crashed into a marshy area off Jekyll Creek, Ga.

Alexander Clark, 60, was making an approach to Jekyll  Island Airport runway when the aircraft started having engine troubles.  Eyewitnesses on the Jekyll Causeway reported seeing a small aircraft go down just short of the airport.  Immediately Coast Guard rescue crews from Station Brunswick, Ga., and Air Station Savannah along with Georgia Department of Natural Resources responded to the call.

The Coast Guard helicopter crew located the downed aircraft.  Clark was found standing on the wingtip waving a flashlight.  After determining Clark was the only person involved in the plane crash, rescue crews hoisted Clark safely to the helicopter and transported him to the Jekyll Island Airport where local Medical Emergency Technicians were standing by.
