Coast Guard To Enforce Safety Zone Regulation For Swim Across San Juan Harbor SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Coast Guard Sector San Juan boat crews will be enforcing a Safety Zone Regulation for the swim across San Juan Harbor Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. During the event, the San Juan Harbor will be closed to all incoming and outgoing vessel traffic in need of transiting through the Safety Zone. A Safety Zone Regulation is necessary to protect life and property from the inherent dangers associated with swimming in the commercial port of San Juan Harbor. The attached chartlet shows the Safety Zone Regulated Area. The zone covers all waters within the black horizontal lines starting from point one, La Puntilla, then south to point two, the Cataño ferry dock, then along the shoreline to point three, Punta Cataño, then north to point four, Pier 1, where the zone then continues west along the shoreline meeting and ending at the original-point 1 in La Puntilla. Boaters are advised to take extra care and plan ahead for any boating activities in or around San Juan Harbor Sunday. No vessels will be allowed to transit the Safety Zone Regulated Area between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. except as permitted by the Captain of the Port San Juan or a designated representative.
The Coast Guard may be contacted on VHF-FM Channel 16 or 787-289-2041 for any additional information or clarification. Violators of the provisions covering this Safety Zone Regulation may incur in civil penalties. Boaters are advised to have their marine radios on; information will be broadcasted on VHF channels 16 & 22.
Any person or mariner who violates the established Safety Regulation Zone shall be liable to suspension or revocation of their marine license and may be subject to fines ranging from $1,000 to $32,500. The Safety Zone Regulation will be strictly enforced by the U.S. Coast Guard with the support of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and Cataño Municipal Police Maritime Units.###
