CHARLESTON, S.C. - Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies are reminding boaters to be more vigilant on the water in recognition of National Safe Boating Week and the holiday weekend. The Coast Guard, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Charleston County Sheriffs Office and the City of Charleston Police Department will have an increased presence on Charleston waterways during the holiday weekend. They will especially be on the lookout for boaters operating under the influence and violating no wake zones. The Coast Guard Auxiliary and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources will also provide free vessel safety inspections at various local marinas. The Coast Guard encourages boaters to enjoy the holiday weekend on the water responsibly. Before going out on the water, ensure that your vessel has enough lifejackets for everyone aboard, a working VHF marine radio, flares or signaling devices and file a float plan with family or friends to assist search and rescue coordinators in the event you don't return as scheduled. The Coast Guard will be monitoring VHF channel 16 for boaters in distress. Boaters can also call the Coast Guard Sector Charleston command center directly at 843-724-7616 for assistance. A first-time boating under the influence offender can expect jail time and a fine of up to $5,000. A boater can be charged with BUI with a BAC of .08 or higher. Free vessel safety inspections will be conducted at the following marinas -
