Coast Guard Continues Search for Missing Miami Boater

MIAMI - Coast Guard crews are continuing their search Monday for Dan Stonionis -- the Miami boater who was reported missing Saturday.

Crews from an Air Station Clearwater, Fla., HC-130 Hercules aircraft and the Coast Guard Cutter Okracoke are searching near Key Largo, Fla.

Two good Samaritans off Elliott Key, Fla., located Stonionis' unmanned 25-foot boat heading toward their vessels Saturday.  They managed to stop the vessel and, after going onboard, located a cellular phone.  They called the last number dialed and spoke with a person claiming to be Stonionis' father.

Search and rescue coordinators at the District Seven Command Center in Miami were contacted by the good Samaritans at approximately 4 p.m., stating Stonionis was missing.  An HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Miami, and a rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Miami Beach, Fla., were launched immediately to search for Stonionis.

Two HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Clearwater, an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Miami, a boat crew from Station Islamorada, Fla., Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers, a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue boat, and Biscayne National Park Service officers have assisted in the search for Stonionis.

Anyone with information on Stonionis' whereabouts, is asked to call the District Seven Command Center at 305-415-6800.
