Coast Guard Requests Boater's Assistance

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coast Guard is requesting assistance from local boaters to monitor South Carolina waterways.

America’s Waterway Watch program calls on all port and waterfront users to report suspicious activity in and around the area where they live, work and play. The purpose of America's Waterway Watch is to allow people who work and spend their leisure time on the waterways and waterfront to assist the federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies by being ever vigilant in recognizing possible threats and crimes on and around our waterways.

“Although waterway security is better than ever, people should always be on the lookout of unusual activity,” said Capt. Michael McAllister, commanding officer of Sector Charleston. “No one knows the waters better than those who use them on a routine basis for work and recreation.”

Specific suspicious activities include unusual surveillance of vessels and facilities, individuals loitering around bridges, packages placed around bridge footings, and abnormal diving activity or night operations. Anyone observing suspicious activity is simply asked to note details and contact the National Response Center’s hotline at (800)-424-8802 or 877-24WATCH. More information is available at www.americaswaterwaywatch.org.

The Coast Guard is using this program as one way to promote better situational awareness within the maritime community.
