Coast Guard Rescues 2 Injured Women
MIAMI - A Coast Guard Station Miami Beach boat crew rescued two women with head injuries from the waters of Biscayne Bay near Hobie Beach Saturday.
Initial reports indicate the two women were swimming with friends who were aboard personal watercraft. One of the personal watercraft operators reportedly tried to pick the women up from the water and that is when they were struck by the watercraft.
The Coast Guard rescue crew was returning from a false alarm when it came upon the injured women shortly after 6 p.m. The crew transported the women to Mercy Hospital.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the cause of this incident.
"This case demonstrates how quickly a day of fun on the water can turn tragic," said Lt. Cmdr. Chris O'Neil, public affairs officer for the Seventh Coast Guard District. "It is imperative that operators of any kind of watercraft fully understand the operational characteristics of their vessel and operate their watercraft in a safe manner. Taking a boater safety class and maintaining situational awareness are key components to a safe day on the water."
