Coast Guard Rescues 18-Year-Old From Sinking Boat

CLEARWATER, Fla. - A rescue crew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla., safely hoisted an 18-year-old male from his sailing vessel that was sinking15 miles south of the Econfina River, Wednesday at about 1 p.m.

The Coast Guard received a call at 11:28 a.m. from Eugene Kashpureff, a Tarpon Springs, Fla. resident, reporting his 25-foot sailing vessel El Tigre, had a broken rudder and was taking on water at a rate of one inch per minute.

The Coast Guard immediatly launched an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Clearwater, a 25-foot rescue boat from Station Yankeetown, Fla., and a HU-25 Falcon jet from Air Station Mobile, Ala., was diverted to assist in the rescue.

Kashpureff abandoned the sinking vessel and entered his life raft at about 12: 22 p.m.  The HH-60 rescue crew arrived onscene at about 1:20 p.m. and safely hoisted Kashpureff into the helicopter.

Kashpureff is being transferred to Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, and is reported to be in stabile condition .
