Coast Guard and Emergency Medical Services personnel prepare to load Etanislao Ortiz Rivera, 35, to an ambulance today at Coast Guard Station San Juan after Ortiz was rescued earlier by the crew of a Coast Guard response boat from the waters at the entrance of San Juan Bay.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - A Coast Guard response boat crew rescued a man from the water at 11:32 a.m. today, struggling to stay afloat and going under at the entrance of the San Juan Bay.

Etanislao Ortíz Rivera, 35, a resident of Corozal, was disoriented and fatigued when rescued by the crew of the response boat.

Sector San Juan Joint Rescue Sub Center controllers received a call at 11:05 a.m. today from the Isla Grande Air Tower relaying a report of a person in the water.  A helicopter crew taking aerial photographs of Old San Juan initially located Ortiz swimming in the vicinity of El Morro Fort, and reported the sighting to Isla Grande Air Tower controllers.

Coast Guard Station San Juan immediately launched a 25-foot response boat to search for the person in the water.  The response boat rescue crew located Ortiz and they safely recovered him from the water.  The response boat crew transported Ortiz to Coast Guard Base San Juan and transferred him to local Emergency Medical Services personnel for transport to a hospital to receive further medical care.

"We are glad to be able to rescue Mr. Ortiz Rivera from drowning," said Senior Chief Petty Officer Charles Lindsey, Officer in Charge Station San Juan.  "There are many dangers associated with swimming in the San Juan Bay, and the crew of our response boat did a great job in conducting a safe rescue."
