Coast Guard Medevacs Passenger from Cruise Ship Explorer of the Seas

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO - A rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen medically evacuated a man from cruise ship Explorer of the Seas at approximately 6:44 p.m. Thursday, approximately 57 nautical miles north of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Samir Kheir, 64, a United States citizen, was suffering from chest pains Thursday and required immediate medical attention ashore.

Coast Guard controllers coordinated a rescue helicopter from Air Station Borinquen, Aguadilla to conduct the medical evacuation.  Once on scene with the Explorer of the Seas, the helicopter landed on the cruise ship helicopter pad and boarded Khier to the aircraft.  The Dolphin helicopter crew transported Kheir and a cruise ship nurse to the Centro Medico Hospital in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, where they transferred Kheir in stable condition to hospital medical personnel.
