Coast Guard Urges Boaters to Stay Off Water JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Coast Guard is urging boaters to stay off the water this afternoon and Sunday due to the expected foul weather off the first coast. A small craft advisory will go into effect at 4 p.m. today and will continue through Monday. Today, winds are expected out of the south at approximately 20 knots with four to six-foot seas. Inland waterways are expected to be choppy. Conditions are expected to worsen Sunday with winds at 20-25 knots from the south-west and seas are expected to be between four to six feet. Inland waterways are expected to be rough. "Our primary concern is the safety of the boating community, and the safest thing to do with these types of expected conditions is to stay off the water," said Lt. Cmdr. Heather Hanson, chief of Response for Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville. The Coast Guard also reminds boaters to secure their vessel before the storm arrives. Boaters should also ensure that any gear above deck be properly stowed and secured. Loose gear or an unsecured boat could appear as a debris field and could trigger an unnecessary search by the Coast Guard. ###
