Coast Guard Rescues Missing Diver Off Saint Croix

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - A Coast Guard response boat crew rescued a diver from the water yesterday, who went missing after diving on a reef on the eastern side of Sandy Point, Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Idelfonso García, 62, resident of Saint Croix, was found yesterday by a Coast Guard 25-foot response boat crew.  His diving partner, Hector Alamo, reported to the Coast Guard at approximately 2:45 p.m. yesterday that Garcia had been missing for over an hour.

Immediately, Coast Guard controllers launched a 25-foot response boat from Coast Guard Regional Inspection Office, Saint Croix, and Saint Croix Blue Lightning Maritime Police launched a marine unit to search for the missing diver.  The Coast Guard rescue crew located and recovered Garcia at approximately 4 p.m. yesterday from the water with no medical injuries.

Garcia was transported to Fredrickstead, Saint Croix, where he was turned over to Emergency Medical Service personnel waiting at the pier.
