U.S. Coast Guard helps U.S. Virgin Islands mariners with fingerprinting, license applications

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - A U.S. Coast Guard Regional Exam Center REC representative will visit Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, from 1 to 2 Nov. to assist mariners with fingerprinting and application packages for merchant mariner's documents, licenses and certificates of registry.

Mariners that request fingerprinting services must provide a complete application and two forms of valid identification and at least one of them must have a photograph.  Among the most common types of identification are, U.S. or U.S. Territory issued drivers license, passport or original birth certificate.  Expired documents will not be accepted by the REC representative as a valid means of identification.

The REC representative will meet with mariners by appointment only, 1 Nov. from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 2 Nov. from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Mariners in need of fingerprinting and application assistance must contact the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment, Saint Thomas, at (340) 776-3497 to schedule an appointment.

This is the third visit by a REC representative to Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, since the Federal Register published a U.S. Coast Guard interim rule Jan. 13, 2006 that included new security requirements for mariners who apply for original, renewal, raise of grade licenses and certificates of registry. The interim rule became effective Jan. 13, and is applicable for applications received by the Coast Guard on or after that date.  Under the new requirements, all applicants for licenses and certificates of registry must have their identity checked and their fingerprints taken for a criminal record review by the Coast Guard.

For additional information on other valid identifications that may be presented to the REC representative, contact the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment, Saint Thomas, at (340) 776-3497 or the Sector San Juan Public Affairs Specialist at (787) 510-7923.
