U.S. Coast Guard helps U.S. Virgin Islands mariners with fingerprinting, license applications |
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO - A U.S. Coast Guard Regional Exam Center REC representative will be in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, March 21-22, to fingerprint mariners and assist with the application packages for merchant mariner's documents, licenses and certificates of registry. The REC representative will meet with mariners by appointment only. Mariners in need of fingerprinting and application assistance should contact the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment by telephone at (340) 776-3497 to schedule an appointment. The Federal Register published a U.S. Coast Guard interim rule Jan. 13 that includes new security requirements when mariners apply for original, renewal, and raise of grade licenses and certificates of registry. The interim rule became effective Jan. 13, and is applicable for applications received by the Coast Guard on or after that date. Under the new requirements, all applicants for licenses and certificates of registry must have their identity checked and their fingerprints taken for a criminal record review by the Coast Guard. ### |
